School Fund Raising

Many public and private schools adopt a fund-raising program each year to supplement government and parental support for needed items like building improvements and classroom supplies. Numerous computers, whiteboards, textbooks, and erasers have been purchased as a result of enthusiastic student support in selling a variety of products to family members and neighbors.

There are many types of well-established fundraisers to choose from. For example, some  of the chain supermarkets offer a cash rebate to the schools listed on shoppers’ personal registration cards. A member family might spend $6,000 per year in groceries at that store, of which $200 could be donated back to the school. Related to this effort is the popular brand-name label clipping and saving strategy that many schools ask parents to endorse. Campbell’s products and Box tops for education are two of the more popular programs of this type.

Students often sell specially made candy bars or holiday gifts like candles or dish towels, with a percentage going toward school needs. Entertainment books, with hundreds of coupons for many popular entertainment establishments, are another type of fundraiser that students can handle directly by selling coupon books to families and friends.

Teachers sometimes organize school-based car washes, bake sales, and flea markets, with additional potential for student involvement. The community is more likely to participate and make donations when the students themselves are involved in the fund raising process.

Just be careful not to let your kids go selling door to door alone, even in your own neighborhood, as this can be risky if there are child molesters or other types of criminals residing nearby. Always accompany your kids when they go around the neighborhood for any purpose, and don’t let them give strangers personal details, such as their name, address, or contact information.
